Press Release. - 1972 Rugby League World Cup Final Great Britain retain the World Cup. The last Great Britain team to taste World Cup glory in 1972 will mark the 50th anniversary of their success as guests of honour at this year's Rugby League World Cup semi-final at Elland Road, Leeds, on Friday November 11.

Euro 1972 finals results: Semi-finals: Belgium 1-2 West Germany; Hungary 0-1 Soviet Union. Third-place play-off: Hungary 1-2 Belgium. Final: West Germany 3-0 Soviet Union.

West Germany were hot favourites to win the cup, in 1972 they had won the European Championships in a convincing way, and as hosts in 1974 with virtually an identical team, they looked like certain finalists although their confidence got a knock when East Germany beat them in the first round.
